Animation is the imagination laid bare for all to see, our own personal constructed realities shared with others, story telling in it's purest form, or just a bunch of funny shit drawn for people to laugh their arses off to. It's all good.

Hi!

I've made a new abstract animation based on overlapping layers of folding origami which combine to create patterns and pretty stuff.

I created the piece to test my skills in design and animation principles, most notably in using overlapping actions to exaggerate the weight of movements. If overlapping actions are executed well enough in drawn animation the movements can be more iconic and believeable than in most big 3D productions.

for example;

on another note, Don Hertzfeldt has a new short out... HERE!

and here's a spinning paper birdy, with glitches because flash is a stupid idiot.

anyone like origami? anyone? no? oh shit...

HEY!! HAPPY NEW GODDAMNED YEAR!!

How have you been? It's been a while... we should hang out more often.

As my gift to you I haven't slept in days to animate 9 seconds for the 24HRC3 while also trying to be a good dad to my 7 week old son Talbot. He's a sweet kid and he makes the best poop I've ever eaten!
Ricepirate put the collaboration together and everyone involved has mad skills, it was an honour to serve with them, and to be involved in a gushing tribute to this site which has robbed me of the best years of my life.

I'm in Melbourne Australia and here we live nine hours ahead of Newgrounds... if you want to know anything about the future I'm willing to answer any questions you may have. It's also summer here, 40 degrees celcius here yesterday (1 million degrees fahrenheit), WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?

Here's a runloop of the mighty PICO... I've got a couple of other projects which are nearly finished and should hopefully be up by the end of January.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE FUTURE!

Hey Newgrounds,
I hope you guys are all keeping well. My wife and I are still waiting for the little baby bastard to come out, the doctors are saying that it could happen at any time now, and if it doesn't happen before the 7th of November they're going to go in there and force him out!

So, to take my mind of the stress of impending fatherhood and to celebrate finishing another semester of my post grad degree, I've made an animated clip out of retarded picture fonts for this months animation club screening. The theme was supposed to be public transport, but I've pretty much ignored that and made this. I showed it tonight and the little theatre was silent... I guess they were in awe.
I made it as a joke but I really enjoy how it turned out, mostly because of the music.

The track I used is an amazing piece of dubstep insanity by max4745 here on Newgrounds. If you haven't listened to his stuff you should check it out.

Anyway, I'm going to sleep now, it's after midnight here. nighty night.

So, how are you guys doing out there in interwebs land. As usual I'm busy and don't have much time to check stuff out at the moment, but I was stoked to notice that Newgrounds got a mention as one of Time's top sites of 2010. Well played guys, both staff and contributors, you all deserve the exposure.

I just saw Did You Hear That Vol.2 and I've got to say that GoatMan, Yotam and the guys did an amazing job on it, real professional like.

So, I took a couple of days out of my life to finally do some animation, and made a quick clip for the latest Secret Handshake screening in Melbourne, while also trying my hand at a complex lipsync exercise.

The theme for this month was Jungle, so I decided I'd animate an angry chimp...

He's pretty insane... but he's got a powerful voice!

Oh and here's a stop motion piece which blew my mind the other night!

I do miss animating and chatting with you guys, I hope you're all still out there working away together. If you've made something and you're pretty sure I haven't seen it copy and paste a link below and I'll check it out and leave you a review.

Oh, and it's only TEN MORE WEEKS UNTIL MY SON IS BORN!!!

HEY HEY WE'RE THE MONKEYS!!

Hey, I've got big news people, I've created the next generation of Newgrounds users!
In case you missed the news last time, we're pregnant and it's going to be a boy (well he already is one, but he's still in hiding)!!

I've also made a new movie for June's Animation Club Screening in Melbourne to the theme of fairytales. It's called Mr Pickles and the Bum Kitty. I figured that you can tell any old story and call it a fairytale, so I thought I'd test that theory out. I took some storyboard sheets out with me when I was out drinking with my mates, and we took turns drawing the next frame of the story. It came out hilarious, weird and senseless. When I woke up in the morning I looked it over, giggled and then over the next week I animated it. Just to keep things interesting, the majority of it was animated one night while drinking a bottle of red, making sure it didn't lose it's drunkeness.
check it out!!

Here's some footage of our 20 week ultrasound, see if you can spot his wang because I can't but the doctor was positive that it's there so who am I to argue.

A couple of weeks ago I spent 9 days straight locked in a cinema watching the Melbourne Animation Festival, and I thought I'd share my favourite piece with you. Logorama is just amazing!!

Where the hell is that guy going with a green cat at this time of day? weird bastard!

New movie, and it's going to be a boy!!

Hi guys!

As you may or may not know I've been having unprotected sex for about three years now, and now I have to face the consequences of my actions by bringing a child into the world and raising it as one of my own. I can't wait to be a dad, It's going to be awesome! I've been spending the past few months getting used to the idea, and learning, hoping and preparing for the onslaught. We're due in early November so I've still got some time... Does anyone have any suggestions on what would make me a good dad?

I also went to China for two weeks in April, and I've been studying and working too hard, creating chunks of animations which all still need to be finished... screenprinting... drawing stupid characters... I think I've kind of burnt myself out with baby stress, study and work. Blah blah blah... {:0

Anyways here's an amazing animation that Fran Krause recommended from the calarts grad screening. Maybe you've already seen it, Nath Milburn was real excited about it and posting it around. Hi Nath!

.

I'd like to apologise to 10JD, Kajenx and RedHarvest for disappearing with little explanation, I didn't expect to be gone so long or to get so busy. If there is still time I'd still like to make something for the throwback collab, I'll be putting together a Sketchy Friends Collaboration to Kajenx's music in about three weeks time, and I'll put the finishing touches on and be posting up the Guinea Pig collab soon...

Here's Jesus morphing into a dog... which is part of a clip I just uploaded

I'm going to be a dad!!

Fons Schiedon is an animation god, he has worked for all sorts of glamorous clients, but my favourite are his deceptively simple Violently Happy Bugs shorts he made for MTV. They were a pretty big inspiration for the sketchy friends style stuff I've been doing.
If you want to see more here's his website.

As far as my work goes, I didn't get my piece finished in time for this months animation club screening, but I did put something in just for giggles... I'll post a link to it when they upload it, because I'm not proud of it enough to upload it myself.
And... I had a few parts in Moarphs: In and Out a collab run by the mighty M-Shack
And... I'm still working away on something for the throwback collab run by 10JD.

Oh, and here's another hideous walking creature I drew a while ago for Lochie's birthday {:)

Hey, It's been a slow week of animation for me. I'm not feeling too inspired and I'm very busy with other work so what are you gonna do? What I have done I'm pretty happy with though and before last week I was working like a machine, so I guess I'm due for some down time.

so, since I'm not doing all that much, I thought I'd show you the work of someone who has, Nick Cross. He's made two fantastic short films in the classic 40's style which are absolutely beautiful.

Yellow Cake is my personal favourite. It deals with some big issues... cake issues.

.
/* */
The Waif of Persephone is also amazing, it gets real evil and freaky too

.
/* */
And just to show you that he's not all doom and gloom, he made this clip about kites for Yo Gabba Gabba

.
/* */
MrScriblam just told me about nick's newest project and that he is looking for donations to help find it. Perhaps some of you nice people might wanna donate to it! ZekeySpaceyLizard is among the people donating.
a link to his blogpost about the project

this guy looks how I'm feeling... well, I'm not all that bothered really because I'm going to go to China some time in the next few months to dance and eat peking duck!

slow progress is still progress I guess...

There are so many cartoons throughout the history of animation about frogs, it's crazy!

I think it's because they are so stretchy and floppy that you can do crazy things to their anatomy and still have it be believable. And they are also so damned funny looking and cute.

anyway, here's a few of my favourites from what I've seen lately;

Cartoon Hangover featured this short by Chris Confortti called "frog" last week. If you haven't been watching cartoon hangover or channel frederator you really should, they're always showing great work... they even showed one of mine about a year ago.

.
/* */
This next one is Swing Wedding produced by Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising 1937. The voices and movement are amazing in their exaggerations, and the swing music is just so damned sassy you'll be uncontrollably shaking yer ass! It's loaded up to the brim with racial stereotypes but that was the style at the time...

.
/* */
Then there's Flip the Frog, the character by the god of early animation Ub Iwerks this one's The Cuckoo Murder Case (1930) It's not his best but I love the way he moves and the stupid slapstick interactions with his phone and car. If you're making a part for The Throwback Collab, this is the kind of thing that 10JD is looking for.

.
/* */
oh and I think I heard a rumour about disney making something frog related recently, but who knows if that's true.

Here's a gif of a running froggy fish type guy for DarkShadow8181's weekly animation throwdown from a couple of weeks ago.
He's put together a weekly challenge for people to create and discuss their animation, the latest topic is jumps, which would be perfect for frogs! It's interesting and full of tips to make you a better animator so get your damned selves involved.

what's up with all the frogs in animation?

This ticks all the boxes. It's beautifully animated, is loaded full of cocks and vaginas, and it has an important message behind it... hmm?

.
/* */
and while we're watching bad taste clips, tell me you guys all know Dan Meth's work, here's one of my favourites

.
/* */
and another of my Dan Meth favourites!

.
/* */
In other news I've committed myself to doing too much work once again... I've made parts for a Morphing collaboration run by M-Shack if you get in quick there still might be time for you to get involved, I'm going to make a part for the Throwback Collab which is being run by 10JD any excuse to draw in the 20's silent movie rubber way, the Animation Club's Secret Handshake has started back up with a new screening on the 24th of February so I'll be making a piece to the theme of doctors and nurses, I've taken a scene for the starwars uncut project, and I'm cleaning up and compiling a bunch of my walking loops into a flash to submit soon. So, let's just see how that works out, eh?

here's a bunch of flippy floppy fish guys taking a stroll

Come and watch the perfect video for Newgrounds!
