Animation is the imagination laid bare for all to see, our own personal constructed realities shared with others, story telling in it's purest form, or just a bunch of funny shit drawn for people to laugh their arses off to. It's all good.

New movie thing coming along!

Posted by TheBoogley Jan. 20, 2009 @ 5:57 PM EST

My new movie is coming along, it's only a 30 second thing with characters moving to music, but I'm working at 30 fps and putting a lot of thought into the movement. I'm thinking it's shaping up to be the best thing I've done from a technical animation point of view, and I'm going to take my time finishing it to put it in a group exhibition with some workmates in March.

Oh, and how about that Obama fellow and his little inauguration thingy, now that's some serious public speaking right there! Our Prime Minister in Australia can give a good speech, but is a bit too nerdy to pull off this sort of PRIDE IN YOUR COUNTRY thing. Well done America, I think you've made a good choice.

I'm thinking about a new idea for a collaboration to start some time in the next month, because I just can't see the street scene one working unless we were all in the same studio... I'm thinking about a mutation collaboration, similar to the morphing one but with more consideration of the changes, cute characters mutating into monsters and stuff like that.
What do you guys think?

Back in action!

Posted by TheBoogley Jan. 12, 2009 @ 11:37 PM EST

Hey!!

I'm back, refreshed and animating again.

Had a good break, brewed some beer, drew some pictures, played through mario and zelda on the wii, and now it's time to once again sit at a screen drawing pictures into the small hours of the morning.

I'm working on an animation to music which is only going to run for 30 seconds, it'll be kind of like those little segments on the muppets or sesame street. No story, just fun characters dancing around. I've been drawing funny looking characters in my sketchbooks for years, and I think it's time to watch them dance! Coming up with a story to put them in is just too much for these little guys, I just wanna see them move.

So yeah, no collaboration for now... anyway you should all be making parts for the Street Fighter one.

And what's with all these shape animation movies coming out? I leave you guys alone for five minutes... Actually I really like some of them, particularly the Swains one "High Five... Sides".

Here's a gif of a really old animation I did years ago but didn't finish about an elephant and his possessed trunk... Slappity slap!

lazy or burnt out?

Posted by TheBoogley Dec. 22, 2008 @ 6:30 PM EST

I have a great idea for a collab, but no motivation at this moment to get it started...

I had a great idea for a christmas movie, but all I got done was a fifteen minute crappy santa walk sequence...

It's been a long year of working hard and now I'm lacking inspiration.
I think I'll take a rest, get out there in the real world and have me some fun, then when the ideas start flowing again early in the new year I'll come back and kick all your arses...

I'm still lurking around though watching movies and leaving stupid comments around the place...

MERRY CHRISTMAS YOU SCUMBAGS!

Okay, it's been incubating for a couple of weeks now, and it's just about to hatch!
For those of you who didn't see my earlier newspost, the idea is based on this film, Tango, by Zbig Rybczynski from Poland.
It won the 1980 oscar for animation.

.

But what I'm thinking is that we open it up a bit more so it's not as difficult for you guys to make parts for or for me to manage. It will be a street scene, and you guys will each create an animation or animations that moves through the scene, which I will then bring together into on big looping city street scene.

People who are newer to animation can create a single looping walk sequence which I will create a tutorial for, and people who are feeling confident can create a fully animated sequence of their character or characters moving through the scene, mugging each other, selling hotdogs, committing suicide, whatever...

Here's an artwork that kind of sums up the idea a bit, imagine each of the characters are animated by different people and moving through the scene on an endless loop.

Hopefully by this time next week I'll have the full thing set up with a background for you all to download and use, examples of how the thing'll work and the walk sequence tutorial... I'm busy as this week, but I can't wait to get started on this project... STAY TUNED!

Thanks again and new movie progress!

I just wanted to thank everyone one last time for how well received the Morphing Orgasm was!
It was unbelievable, I think there was only a couple of negative responses to it, which freaked me out. :O

I've thought of an idea for another big collaborative project, but it's going to be a difficult one, so I'm going to wait until I'm not so busy and can dedicate more time to making it work...
The idea is to have a movie with loads of overlapping looping movieclips, and comes from this short animation by Zbig Rybczynski from Poland which won an oscar in 1980. It took him seven months to make and there is a hell of a lot of planning in it to make the bastard work. Nothing exiting happens and it goes for eight minutes if you've got a short attention span maybe don't bother, though there is nudity and a sex scene in it. :3

.

I'm making a movie for this months screening of the Animation Club in Melbourne, it's coming along well, here's a little loop from it. I'll be uploading it here too at the end of the month.

MORPHING ORGASM HAS HIT THE PORTAL!!

47 newgounds users work together to create a big sloppy heart-melting orgiastic extravagnza!
Actually there's nothing actually rude in it... except a fly with boobs and tentacles... we just wanted to get your attention!

I'VE TURNED THE MOVIE INTO A SCREENSAVER FOR MAC AND PC
Click on these links to go to the download page.

MAC
http://www.sendspace.com/file/m7kzme

PC
http://www.sendspace.com/file/ezryji

They are .zip archives, because I find that files are more stable if you archive them before sending them around. You should be able to just double click on them to dearchive them, and then double click again to install the screensaver. There was a problem with the PC one stopping on the pumpkin, I've fixed that now, so if you have the one with that problem you can download it again and it will work perfectly.

Also Deadheart wanted an inverted version of the movie, with white drawings on a black background as his screensaver, so here's a link to a new inverted PC one.

If you're interested in how we made the morphs, I've made tutorial videos you can watch. They're in my previous newspost!

If you're still looking, I've also just uploaded a halloween movie;

I created it to be in a screening for www.theanimationclub.com at a bar in Melbourne, and it got the most audience votes, winning me a tshirt, a happy tree friends dvd and the choice of theme for next months screening. I chose Practical Jokes. If you're interested in getting invovled go to www.theanimationclub.com and check out the submission guidelines and past entries.

"One Big Morphing Orgasm." (collab)

Posted by TheBoogley Oct. 3, 2008 @ 9:54 PM EDT

edit** WE ARE NOW OFFICIALLY FULL :O

Okay, here's the idea.

I want every one of you bitches who says they can animate to make a 16 frame morph and be part of, "One Big Morphing Orgasm."
(Luis came (prematurely) up with the name.)
Here's a link to the forum! To do this shit right it needs to be organised, so I've come up with three steps to get there.

Step1.
The first thing I need is a single drawing done in flash from each person involved, it should be pretty simple but it can be of anything.
Send me the FLA file with the picture in it.
TheBoogley@gmail.comKeep your pictures as black and white line drawings, otherwise the inbetweening bit could get very messy.
Specs. 640x480 pixels.
watch the video below to see who to set the file up.

.

Step2.
Then I will go through the images and send each of you back an FLA that starts with your image at frame 1 and ends in another persons at frame 17.
You then morph them together by inbeweening it,
so you then draw on frame 9,
then 5 and 13,
then 3, 7, 11, and 15,
then 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16, to get a smooth morph.
Doesn't make sense? Watch the video below to see.

.

Step3.
Once you've got that bit done you need to inbetween it a bit more at the start and end of the morph so that it "eases in and out".
Add three drawings between frames 1 and 2,
and one between 2 and 3,
and the same at the other end,
1 drawing between 15 and 16,
and three between 16 and 17.
Weird shit, watch the video below to see it done.

.

What we'll end up with in the end is a continuous loop of morphing animation which people can watch and get spaced out on, better than a lava lamp, better than a plastic bag in the wind, better than a bought one.

I'm going to submit the bastard on the 1st of November and you can do multiple parts, so get your drawings in so we can get started.
I'm hoping for at least 50 parts... Is that realistic? I don't know.

I'm hoping to get parts from as many people as possible, from the best animators on the site to the guys who are just starting out and are willing to put the work in.

This is fairly difficult, but I find that once people have done this exercise, they understand how animation works a lot more... Put the effort in, I'm not accepting any old crap.

IT'S MORPHIN' TIME!!

Posted by TheBoogley Oct. 3, 2008 @ 2:51 AM EDT

I've got a couple of projects on at the moment, but they're too huge, so I thought I'd just make a little morph for shits and giggles with you guys.
I love doing this stuff, just taking one picture and inbetweening it to the next one until it's smooth.

Screw storylines, just morphs.
If it was up to me this would be all that was ever broadcast... no news, no reality tv, just morphing gifs.
What a wonderful world!

Tell me a story about a phone, a walrus, a piano and a piece of celery, that ends in tears.
DO IT!! :O

Boogley runs!!

Posted by TheBoogley Sep. 6, 2008 @ 8:54 PM EDT

I've spent some time working though the animation exercises in the Richard Williams book, The Animators Survival Guide... It's a great resource for learning the principles of animation, the technical stuff used in creating realistic movement.

My chances of survival as an animator were slim but thanks to that book I think I'm going to pull through.

I've ordered another one too, Preston Blairs book, Cartoon Animation, which is supposed to be one of the best, and another book on dynamic life drawing for animation.
Any excuse to draw nude people. ;D
